バングラデシュ人学生のための日本の奨学金(2026〜2027年):MEXT・JASSO・授業料減免を解説

奨学金

バングラデシュ人学生が実際に応募できる奨学金は?

There are two very different groups. The first is applied for from Bangladesh before you go: the MEXT scholarship, through either the Embassy of Japan or a Japanese university. The second is applied for after you are already studying in Japan as a self-funded student: JASSO's Honors Scholarship, your school's own scholarships and tuition reductions, and grants from local governments and private foundations. The Study in Japan portal run by JASSO states plainly that most scholarships become available only after you come to Japan.

Under Embassy recommendation, the Embassy of Japan in Bangladesh recruits and does the first screening. Only Bangladeshi nationals can apply from Bangladesh. The figures below are from MEXT's official application guidelines for 2027 entry. MEXT notes that amounts can change each fiscal year with the government budget, and a small regional allowance of 2,000 or 3,000 yen is added in some designated areas.

  • What is covered: monthly stipend, entrance exam, admission and tuition fees at the university (waived), and an economy air ticket to Japan at the start and home at the end.
  • What is not covered: travel from your home to Dhaka airport, airport taxes, travel insurance, extra baggage and travel inside Japan.
  • Grade guidance: the Embassy's Bangladesh page has listed minimums such as GPA 5 in both SSC and HSC for science and engineering undergraduates, GPA 4.5 for humanities, and first-class results throughout for research students. Always check the current year's circular.
  • You cannot apply through the Embassy if you are already enrolled, or plan to enrol, in Japan as a self-funded student before the scholarship starts. A language-school student in Japan cannot simply switch to the Embassy route.

MEXT also has Teacher Training and Japanese Studies categories. Teacher Training is for working school teachers with several years of experience and runs on a separate schedule; Japanese Studies is a one-year programme for university students majoring in Japan-related subjects and is not listed on the Embassy's Bangladesh page. Ask the Embassy if you think you fit either.

バングラデシュでの募集時期と結果発表はいつ?

Every Embassy-route category in Bangladesh follows the same yearly schedule published by the Embassy of Japan. The application window at the Ministry of Education is short, often only a couple of weeks, so watch the Ministry and Embassy websites from March onward.

  1. April: the call is published on the website of the Ministry of Education, Bangladesh.
  2. May: applications are submitted to the Ministry of Education, which shortlists candidates for the Embassy.
  3. June to July: written examination and interview at the Embassy.
  4. July: provisional selection by the Embassy (first screening result). Research students then contact Japanese universities for a letter of provisional acceptance.
  5. December to January: final selection by MEXT in Japan, followed by university placement in January.
  6. March: orientation and visa application. April or September/October: departure for Japan.

So for 2027 entry, the 2026 call and exams have already happened, and final results are expected around December 2026 to January 2027. If you are reading this now and missed it, the next realistic target is the call for 2028 entry, expected around April 2027. Past MEXT exam papers with answers for several years are free on the Study in Japan website: practise them under time, without a calculator, as calculators are not allowed in the exam.

In university recommendation, you apply directly to a Japanese university, not to the Embassy. The university screens applicants and recommends selected candidates to MEXT, which makes the final decision. Only universities approved by MEXT can recommend, not every university has a quota, and each sets its own eligibility and deadlines. The Embassy notes that these calls typically open around November to December and close around January to February, with MEXT selecting grantees around the end of June and most arriving in Japan around late September.

  • Best fit: strong CGPA, a clear research topic, and a professor in Japan whose work matches yours.
  • Many such programmes are English-taught graduate courses, so English ability matters as much as Japanese.
  • Search each university's international admissions page for 'MEXT university recommendation' or 'Japanese Government Scholarship, university recommendation', and read its own guideline.
  • You can prepare both routes in the same year, but MEXT does not allow applying to two MEXT programmes at the same time, so check the rules before you submit the second application.

渡日後の奨学金:JASSO・授業料減免・財団奨学金

Most Bangladeshi students go to Japan self-funded, usually through a Japanese language school. For them, the scholarships that matter come later, and almost all are applied for through the school, not individually.

  • JASSO Honors Scholarship (Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately Financed International Students): 30,000 yen a month at a Japanese language institute and 48,000 yen at university or graduate level, for 12 months (April to March) or 6 months (October to March). Language-school students must be aiming to enter higher education. You must hold Student status, have strong grades and financial need, and your school must recommend you; each school's quota depends on its number of international students.
  • University students applying for the JASSO scholarship after arrival also need, among other conditions, a previous-year GPA of at least 2.30 and JLPT N2, an EJU Japanese score of 200 or more, or English at CEFR B2 or above.
  • School scholarships and tuition reductions: many language schools and universities reward good attendance, grades or JLPT results with a partial tuition reduction or a one-time award. Ask the school for its written scholarship rules before you choose it. JASSO's Study in Japan site has a search tool for university scholarships and tuition reductions.
  • Local governments and private foundations: some prefectures, cities and company foundations fund international students living or studying in their area, in a certain field, or from certain countries. Only a few accept applications before arrival; most are applied for through your school once you are in Japan.

日本に「全額無料の奨学金」はある?

Yes, but only one kind matters for most Bangladeshi students: MEXT. It pays tuition, a monthly stipend and air tickets, so it is the closest thing to 'full free'. It is also very competitive: the Ministry shortlists a limited number of applicants, the Embassy tests and interviews them, and MEXT makes the final choice in Japan. A strong student should absolutely apply, but should not build the whole family plan around winning it.

The language-school route almost always starts self-funded: the first year's tuition and the sponsor's bank documents are needed before the visa. Scholarships such as JASSO's 30,000 yen a month and school reductions help later, but they do not replace the first-year budget.

Scam warning: nobody can sell, guarantee or 'arrange' a MEXT scholarship. There is no agent quota and no 'Embassy contact'. If anyone asks for money to secure MEXT, or advertises a 'full free scholarship package' that still needs a large payment, walk away and report it. Applying for MEXT costs nothing.

国費留学に強い出願準備の方法

  1. Grades first: keep SSC, HSC and university results as high as possible. Documents are the first filter.
  2. Practise past papers: download the official past MEXT exam questions and answers and time yourself, especially English and Maths.
  3. Start Japanese early: the Japanese test is taken by everyone. JLPT N5 or N4 is not required, but it shows commitment and makes the interview and the preparatory year easier.
  4. Research students: write a specific, realistic research plan and read the work of professors you want to study with. A letter of provisional acceptance strongly influences the final decision.
  5. Prepare for the interview: be able to explain why Japan, why your field, and how you will use it in Bangladesh, in clear English (and a little Japanese).
  6. Keep documents ready before April: attested certificates and mark sheets, passport or NID, so you can submit inside the short window.

よくある質問

How much is the MEXT scholarship stipend?

For 2027 entry: 143,000 yen a month for research students in preparatory or non-regular status, 144,000 yen for master's students and 145,000 yen for doctoral students; 117,000 yen for undergraduate, college of technology and specialized training students. Tuition is waived and an economy air ticket is provided. MEXT says amounts can change each fiscal year.

When is the MEXT scholarship for Bangladeshi students announced?

Usually around April, on the website of Bangladesh's Ministry of Education, with applications in May, Embassy exams and interviews in June to July, and final MEXT selection around December to January. The call for 2028 entry is expected around April 2027.

Can I get a MEXT scholarship for a master's degree?

Yes, as a research student, through either the Embassy route or a university that has a MEXT recommendation quota. You need a bachelor's degree or 16 years of education, must be born on or after 2 April 1992 for 2027 entry, and need a strong research plan and good results.

Can I apply for MEXT right after HSC?

Yes. The undergraduate category accepts applicants who will complete 12 years of schooling by March of the entry year, so students in their HSC year can apply. You must be born on or after 2 April 2002 for 2027 entry and sit written exams in Japanese, English, Maths and, for science, two science subjects.

Can language-school students in Japan get a scholarship?

Yes, but smaller ones. The JASSO Honors Scholarship pays 30,000 yen a month to selected language-institute students who aim to go on to higher education, through the school's recommendation. Many schools also offer partial tuition reductions for attendance and results. These help, but they do not cover the first year.

Can an agency get me a MEXT scholarship for a fee?

No. MEXT is selected only by the Ministry of Education shortlist, the Embassy of Japan's exam and interview, Japanese universities and MEXT itself. Anyone promising a guaranteed MEXT for money is running a scam. A counsellor can only help you prepare: documents, Japanese, interview practice.
