Why Japan does not need IELTS
Japanese education and the Japanese job market run in Japanese. Immigration's concern for a student visa is whether you can follow classes and live safely — so it asks for Japanese proof, not English. This is why the language-school route has become the most popular path from Bangladesh: no IELTS, lower first-year cost than English-speaking countries, and legal part-time work from the first month.
What replaces IELTS at each level
| Goal | Instead of IELTS | Where to get it in Bangladesh |
|---|---|---|
| Language school + student visa | JLPT N5 / NAT-TEST 5Q / J.TEST F + 150–180 h study certificate | JLPT in Dhaka (July, December); NAT-TEST 6×/year; 180-h course at Inochi |
| Senmon gakko | JLPT N2 (some N3) or 1+ year at a Japanese language school | Usually earned in Japan |
| University (Japanese-taught) | JLPT N2/N1 + EJU + university exam | EJU in Dhaka (selected sessions) or Japan |
| SSW work visa | JFT-Basic (A2) or N4 + sector skills test | JFT-Basic at Prometric Dhaka year-round |
| University (English-taught) | IELTS 6.0–6.5 / TOEFL iBT 80+ / Duolingo (some) | British Council / ETS Dhaka |
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a Japan student visa without IELTS?
Yes. The student visa for a language school, senmon gakko or Japanese-taught university needs Japanese-language proof (JLPT or equivalent), not IELTS.
Is Japanese harder than IELTS for a Bangladeshi student?
N5 is easier and faster than IELTS 6.0 for most students — 3–6 months versus years of English. Japanese word order matches Bangla, which helps. N2 (needed for university) takes 1.5–2 years, usually completed in Japan.
Do I need IELTS for MEXT scholarship from Bangladesh?
No IELTS score is required to apply. The Embassy of Japan in Dhaka holds its own written tests in English and/or Japanese and an interview during the selection.
Can I study in English in Japan without any Japanese?
For admission to an English-taught programme, yes (with IELTS/TOEFL). For daily life, part-time work and most jobs after graduation, you will need Japanese — most universities include Japanese classes for this reason.
