What the COE is — and what it is not
Japan splits the decision in two. Immigration in Japan decides whether you qualify to live in Japan as a student (the COE); the embassy in Dhaka then decides whether to put the visa in your passport. The COE is the heavier check — it examines the school, your background and your sponsor's money. The visa stage mainly confirms identity and intent.
- A COE is not a visa and does not let you enter Japan by itself.
- A COE is tied to one school and one status; changing school means a new application.
- A COE refusal is not a 'ban' — you can reapply for a later intake with a corrected file.
What Immigration checks in a COE application
- The school — its Immigration-approved status, past visa-approval and attendance record, and how many students it admits from each country.
- Your education history — 12+ years completed, certificates genuine, timeline with no unexplained gaps.
- Your Japanese — JLPT/NAT/J.TEST result plus 150–180 hours of formal study for applicants from Bangladesh.
- The sponsor's ability to pay — income, tax and bank history that make the balance believable, and a clear relationship to you.
- Your purpose — a Statement of Purpose that connects your past, this course, and a plan after it.
- Your record — previous Japan refusals, overstays, or criminal records are cross-checked.
COE timeline by intake
Frequently asked questions
How long does the COE take for Bangladeshi students?
Typically about 90 days from the date the school submits to Immigration. Results for the April intake arrive in late February; for October, in late August.
Do I pay tuition before or after the COE?
After. Reputable schools invoice tuition only after the COE is issued; before that you pay only the application and screening fees. Be cautious of anyone asking for full tuition before COE.
Is the e-COE accepted at the Japan embassy in Dhaka?
Yes. Since March 2023 Immigration can issue the COE electronically (PDF by email). You print it for the VFS submission and show it at the airport.
What if my COE expires before I can travel?
The COE is valid for 3 months and cannot be extended in normal circumstances; the school must apply again for the next intake. Apply for the visa within two weeks of receiving the COE to avoid this.
