Japan Residence Card (Zairyu Card) Renewal for Students: When, Documents, Fee

This one's for students already in Japan, or about to fly, who've glanced at the date on their zairyu card and felt a small knot in the stomach. Parents, it's worth a read too, because a late renewal can upset the whole study plan.
Questions I hear most about renewing your card
What is a zairyu card renewal, and do I get a brand-new card?
What you actually apply for is a period of stay extension (在留期間更新). Once approved, immigration gives you a new card or a stamp with the new expiry. Lost or damaged cards go through a separate reissue procedure.
Residence card expiry: what to do, and how early should I renew?
Applications are usually accepted from about three months before expiry. I tell students to go six to eight weeks ahead. Leave it to the last week and one missing paper can sink you, and offices in Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya get crowded.
What Japan immigration extension documents do I need?
Typically: the application form, passport, residence card, a photo (4 cm × 3 cm), and school papers. Ask your school for a certificate of enrollment and attendance record for immigration, plus a grade report. You may also need proof of tuition payment and funds, such as a bank statement, and part-time work records. Lists vary by city and school, so confirm with your school office and the local immigration website.
What is the student visa extension fee in Japan?
You pay nothing when you apply. After approval you buy a revenue stamp, currently around 6,000 yen, but that can change, so check the immigration website before you go. Other costs are on our fees page.
Will low attendance block my extension?
Yes, and it's the biggest risk. Immigration generally looks for attendance around 90 percent, and some schools are stricter. Keep a doctor's note when you're sick. And don't work more than 28 hours a week part-time, because that directly hurts your extension.
Can I stay in Japan while waiting for the result?
If you applied before your expiry date, you can usually stay lawfully until a decision arrives, for up to two months. After the date passes, that protection is gone and you risk overstaying. Don't gamble on it.
What if I'm moving from a language school to university?
That's usually a different process, with admission papers from the new school rather than a simple extension. Start collecting those early. The COE guide explains the earlier steps. And if you're still in Bangladesh thinking about higher study abroad after HSC, start with our study in Japan guide.
What should I do this week?
Check the expiry on the back of your card. Ask your school office for your enrollment certificate and attendance record. Print a bank statement, take the photo, and download and start filling in the form. If you want a stronger profile, the JLPT guide helps, since a better level supports future visas too. For anyone weighing study abroad without IELTS, Japan is a real option, but renewals show you it's a system that rewards preparation, so prepare early.
