Study in Japan in 12 Months: Complete Timeline & Scholarship Guide for HSC Students

Imagine you've just finished your HSC exams. Now comes the big decision—where to study? Public university in Bangladesh? Private? Or abroad? Many students think about Japan, but they don't know when to start or what to do.
I've studied in Japan myself and have helped hundreds of Bangladeshi students go there. The most common questions I get are: “When should I start preparing?”, “How much money do I need?”, “Can I get a scholarship?”—today I'll answer these with a clear 12-month timeline.
Why Japan? (And why it's a smart choice over other destinations)
Here's why Japan appeals to Bangladeshi students:
- Lower cost: Tuition is about 500,000–800,000 JPY per year (roughly 4–6 lakh BDT). Much cheaper than Europe or the US.
- Part-time work: Student visa allows 28 hours/week. In Tokyo, hourly wage is 1000–1200 JPY. You can earn 100,000–120,000 JPY monthly, covering living expenses.
- Abundant scholarships: Japanese government (MEXT), JASSO, private foundations—many cover tuition plus monthly allowance.
- Career prospects: Engineering, IT, business, robotics—the job market is strong. You can switch to a work visa after graduation.
But honestly, you need to learn Japanese. Even if your program is in English, daily life and part-time jobs require Japanese. There are also cultural adjustments—food, social norms, work culture—it takes time. But for serious students, Japan is a fantastic option.
12-Month Timeline: From HSC to Japan
Say you finish HSC in June 2025. Aim to enter a Japanese language school or university in April 2026. Follow this timeline:
Months 1–3 (July–September): Start learning Japanese
Don't waste time after HSC. Start Japanese immediately—online or at an institute in Dhaka. Aim to finish hiragana, katakana, and basic grammar in 3 months. Target JLPT N5 or N4.
Months 4–6 (October–December): Research universities and scholarships
Find which Japanese universities offer your subject. Look at English programs (e.g., Tokyo International University, Waseda's courses) or Japanese programs. For scholarships, check Inochi's scholarships page.
Months 7–9 (January–March): Start applications
Most universities and language schools have deadlines in October–November for April intake. So apply between January and March. Gather documents—transcripts, certificates, recommendation letters, SOP.
Months 10–11 (April–May): Apply for visa
After acceptance, the college will issue a Certificate of Eligibility (CoE). Then apply for a student visa at the Japanese Embassy in Bangladesh. It takes 2–4 weeks. See the pre-departure checklist.
Month 12 (June): Depart for Japan
If classes start in April, you should be in Japan by June (some flexibility). Arrange housing, open a bank account, find part-time work.
Scholarships: How to get them and how much
The most popular scholarships for Bangladeshi students:
- MEXT Scholarship: Full scholarship from the Japanese government. Covers tuition, monthly 143,000 JPY (approx.), airfare. Apply through the embassy, usually in April–May.
- JASSO Scholarship: Monthly 48,000 JPY for language school or university students. Many universities nominate students.
- Private foundation scholarships: Rotary Yonezawa, Takeshi Foundation, etc. They have their own criteria. Research and apply.
Caution: To get scholarships, you need good Japanese skills and academic grades. JLPT N2 or above increases your chances.
Realistic cost picture
First-year expenses (tuition + living) can be around 1.2–1.5 million JPY (about 10–12 lakh BDT). But part-time work covers a big chunk. If you get a scholarship from the second year, costs drop further. Check the eligibility checklist to see if you qualify.
Final word: Start now
If you're an HSC student, start learning Japanese today. Don't waste time. Japan's education system and career opportunities can change your life—but it takes planning and hard work.
