Tokyo vs Osaka: A Guide to Choosing the Best City to Study in Japan

Are you planning to study in Japan but confused between Tokyo and Osaka? Both are great cities, but with different vibes. Based on my own experience living in Japan, I can tell you that this choice can completely change your study experience. So let's talk openly.

Tokyo: The World's Busiest & Most Modern City

Pros

• City of Opportunities: Tokyo has countless language schools, universities, and specialized institutions. Shibuya, Shinjuku, Akihabara—each area has its own culture. If you want to study technology, business, or arts, Tokyo's networking opportunities are immense.
• Part-time Jobs: Tokyo offers many part-time job opportunities. Restaurants, convenience stores, English tutoring—you can earn 1000~1200 yen per hour. But keep in mind, the cost of living is higher.
• Scholarships: Tokyo provides many government and private scholarships. For example, the JASSO scholarship gives 48,000 yen per month—a big help for many.

Cons

• Cost: Tokyo is one of the most expensive cities in the world. Small room rent is 60,000~80,000 yen per month, and with food and transport, you need at least 150,000 yen per month.
• Crowds: During rush hour, trains are so packed that it's hard to even stand on the platform. It takes time to get used to.

Osaka: The Friendly & Affordable City

Pros

• Affordable Living: In Osaka, rent is 40,000~60,000 yen, and overall costs are 20-30% lower than Tokyo. You'll save money and live more comfortably.
• Warm People: People in Osaka are cheerful and open. It's an ideal environment for learning Japanese—they'll help you even if you make mistakes.
• Food Paradise: Osaka is called 'Japan's kitchen.' You can fill your stomach cheaply with takoyaki, okonomiyaki, etc.

Cons

• Fewer Job Opportunities: Compared to Tokyo, internship and job opportunities are somewhat limited. However, IT and manufacturing sectors have good options.
• Colder Winters: Winter feels a bit colder in Osaka, but houses are heated, so it's not a big issue.

Bangladeshi Community: Where is it bigger?

Tokyo has a large Bangladeshi community—in Ikebukuro and Shin-Okubo areas, there are many Bangladeshi restaurants and shops. In Osaka, the number is smaller, but the community is tight-knit. I've seen that Bangladeshis in Osaka help each other more because the smaller number creates stronger bonds.

How to choose?

• Budget: If you want to save money, choose Osaka.
• Career Goals: If you aim for a career in tech, finance, or international business, Tokyo is better.
• Personality: If you prefer a quiet environment, choose Osaka; if you love a busy life, choose Tokyo.

Both cities have excellent Japanese language schools, like Waseda Education in Tokyo and Osaka YMCA in Osaka. Many of my students have studied in both places—they were happy in both.
