Funding Higher Study in Japan Without a Rich Sponsor: A Guide for Bangladeshi Students

Many talented Bangladeshi students dream of studying in Japan but think, 'I don't have a rich father, can I still go?' I often tell them that Japan is one of the few countries where lack of money doesn't have to stop you. With the right plan, you can cover your own expenses.
How much does studying in Japan cost?
First, let's talk numbers. Public universities in Japan charge around ¥500,000 per year (roughly BDT 3.5 lakh, depending on exchange rates). Private universities are higher—¥700,000 to ¥1,000,000. That's still much lower than in Europe or the US. Living costs in Tokyo are about ¥100,000–120,000 per month; other cities are cheaper.
Part-time work: your main income source
Japan allows international students to work up to 28 hours per week. In Tokyo, you can earn ¥1,000–1,200 per hour. That means ¥120,000–150,000 per month—enough to cover rent and food. One of my students worked at a restaurant in Ikebukuro and earned ¥130,000 monthly. Plus, work experience looks great on your resume.
Scholarships available
There are many scholarships: the Japanese government MEXT scholarship, JASSO scholarship, and university-specific ones. If you pass JLPT N2 or N1, your chances increase. Private foundations like Rotary Yoneyama also offer support.
Tuition fee waivers and installments
Most Japanese universities offer partial tuition fee waivers (30–50%) for good academic performance. You can also pay in installments, reducing the upfront burden.
Realistic timeline and career outcomes
Typically, you start with a language school for 1–2 years to learn Japanese. Then enter a university or vocational school. After graduation, job opportunities in Japan are strong, especially in IT, engineering, and business. Japanese companies are eager to hire international graduates.
Honest trade-offs
- Without Japanese language skills, finding a job is tough. Start learning before you go.
- Part-time work income isn't guaranteed to cover everything—you'll need some savings.
- Visa renewal requires regular class attendance and strict adherence to work hours.
All in all, Japan is a smart route for Bangladeshi students. With hard work and planning, you can succeed without a rich sponsor.
