Tokyo vs Osaka for Study: Cost of Living, Lifestyle & Education Compared

So you've decided to study in Japan — great choice! But now comes the big question: Tokyo or Osaka? Both are amazing cities, but they offer very different experiences. I've lived in both, and I've guided hundreds of Bangladeshi students through this choice. Let me break it down with real numbers and honest advice.
Cost of Living: Which is Cheaper?
Generally, Osaka is 20-30% cheaper than Tokyo. But it depends on where exactly you live.
Rent
- Tokyo: Share house 40,000-60,000 yen (BDT 23,000-35,000). Areas like Ikebukuro, Shin-Okubo have Bangladeshi communities. Solo apartment 70,000-100,000 yen.
- Osaka: Share house 30,000-45,000 yen (BDT 18,000-27,000). Nishinagahori, Tsuruhashi are cheaper. Solo apartment 50,000-70,000 yen.
Food & Daily Expenses
Osaka is known as 'the nation's kitchen' — food is noticeably cheaper. A bowl of ramen: Tokyo 800-1,200 yen, Osaka 600-800 yen. Supermarket prices are also lower in Osaka.
Transport
Tokyo's complex train network (JR, Metro, private lines) means a monthly pass costs 10,000-15,000 yen. Osaka's simpler system (JR and Metro) costs 8,000-12,000 yen. But student discounts are available in both cities.
A student once told me: 'In Tokyo I spend about 120,000 yen a month to live comfortably. In Osaka, I can do the same with 90,000 yen.'
Part-Time Work: Opportunities & Income
With a student visa, you can work up to 28 hours per week. Tokyo's hourly wage is higher — average 1,050-1,200 yen, sometimes 1,300+. Osaka averages 950-1,050 yen. Tokyo has more jobs, especially in restaurants, convenience stores, and English teaching. Osaka has a strong tourism and food industry.
But remember: higher income in Tokyo means higher expenses. Your net savings might be similar. In Osaka, lower costs mean you could save more.
Education Quality & Japanese Language Schools
Language Schools
- Tokyo: ISI Language School, KCP, ARC Academy — well-known. Classes are diverse. JLPT N2 pass rate 60-70%.
- Osaka: Osaka Japanese Language Academy, Human Academy — smaller classes, more personal attention. JLPT N2 pass rate 65-75%. Some schools have dedicated support for Bangladeshi students.
Universities
Tokyo has top-tier universities like University of Tokyo, Waseda, Keio. Osaka has Osaka University, Kansai University — excellent but slightly lower in international rankings. Osaka University's engineering and medical programs are world-class.
Lifestyle & Environment
Tokyo
A 24-hour city. Shibuya, Shinjuku, Harajuku — always something happening. But competition is fierce. The Bangladeshi community is large — Shin-Okubo has Bengali shops, mosques, and restaurants.
Osaka
More relaxed. People are friendlier and more open. Namba, Dotonbori are lively. Osaka's food culture is legendary — takoyaki, okonomiyaki. The Bangladeshi community is smaller but close-knit.
Trade-Off: Honest Advice
Tokyo offers more opportunities but more stress. Osaka is cheaper and easier, but you might struggle to get internships with big companies. Think about your goals:
- Want a career in a big corporation? Choose Tokyo.
- Want to focus on language and take it slow? Osaka is great.
- On a tight budget? Definitely Osaka.
Also, from Osaka you can easily visit Kyoto, Kobe, Nara — the Kansai region is perfect for travel. From Tokyo, you can explore Mount Fuji, Yokohama, Nikko.
Final Word: Which One for You?
Think carefully. Consider your budget, language level, and career plans. Both Tokyo and Osaka are wonderful cities — choose the one that fits your dreams.
