Career and PR After Studying in Japan: How to Plan

Many Bangladeshi students want to study in Japan but are unsure about what happens after. Let me clarify—how to plan your career and PR (permanent residency) after finishing studies in Japan.
Cost & Timeline
First, costs. Language school first year: about 700,000–800,000 yen (tuition + living). University costs more. But part-time work can earn you 100,000–120,000 yen per month, covering most expenses.
Timeline: 1–2 years language school, then 4 years university (or 2 years master's). Total 5–6 years.
Job Opportunities
The job market for graduates in Japan is strong, especially in IT, engineering, and hospitality. I've seen students get full-time offers from part-time jobs. For example, a student of mine working at an IT company in Shinjuku got an internship right after passing JLPT N2 and later a job offer.
“Japanese companies value loyalty and long-term relationships, so job stability is high once hired.”
But a warning: without Japanese language skills, jobs are scarce. At least JLPT N2 is required. English-only jobs exist but are fewer.
Path to PR
Normally, you need 10 years of residence (5 years working) for PR. But for highly skilled professionals, the 'Highly Skilled Professional' visa can lead to PR in 1–3 years. For example, a master's degree + 70 points (point system) allows PR application after 3 years.
For Bangladeshi students: graduate from a Japanese university, get a work visa (Engineer/Humanities), work for 5 years, then apply for PR.
Japan vs Other Destinations
- Cost: Japan is cheaper than Canada or Australia. Tuition 500,000–800,000 yen vs 1.5–2 million taka+ elsewhere.
- Part-time: 28 hours/week allowed, helps cover costs.
- PR: Takes time, but job security and social benefits are good.
However, learning Japanese is mandatory. It's a challenge but doable.
How to Plan
First, target JLPT N3 or N2. Then enroll in a Japanese university. Do internships while studying. Start job hunting before graduation. After getting a work visa, work for 5 years and apply for PR.
