30-Day JLPT N5 Study Plan for Working Professionals

Working Professional and JLPT N5? Yes, It's Possible!
I've seen many students say, 'Sir, with office and family, where's the time to study?' But I myself passed JLPT N2 while working in Japan. So I say, lack of time is no excuse — you just need the right plan.
This 30-day plan is specially designed for working professionals and students who can only study 1-2 hours a day. Follow this week-by-week guide and you'll be ready for JLPT N5.
Week 1: Build the Foundation (Days 1-7)
Learn Hiragana and Katakana
Goal for the first week: memorize Hiragana and Katakana. Without these, JLPT N5 is impossible. I recommend learning 10 characters a day. Tip: Use flashcard apps like Anki. Spend 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes at night — you'll finish in 7 days.
Learn Your First 50 Words
JLPT N5 requires about 800 words. In the first week, learn 7-8 new words daily. For example: わたし (I), たべる (eat), いく (go), etc.
Week 2: Start Grammar and Kanji (Days 8-14)
Basic Grammar
JLPT N5 grammar includes: です/ます forms, particles (は, が, を, に, で), question sentences. I usually tell students to follow the first 10 lessons of 'Minna no Nihongo' book. Caution: Don't just memorize grammar; learn with real examples. For instance, 'わたしは学生です' — apply that sentence to your own life.
First 15 Kanji
N5 has 100 kanji in total. In the second week, learn 2-3 kanji daily. For example: 日 (day), 本 (book), 人 (person). Learning meaning and stroke order is important.
Week 3: Listening and Reading Practice (Days 15-21)
15 Minutes of Listening Daily
Get used to listening to Japanese. Search 'JLPT N5 Listening Practice' on YouTube and you'll find many videos. I recommend NHK Easy News podcasts. Strategy: First listen without script, then with script, then again without.
Start Easy Reading
Read children's stories or N5-level texts. For example, simple versions of 'Chibi Maruko-chan' or 'Doraemon'. Practice reading 10 minutes daily.
Week 4: Mock Tests and Revision (Days 22-30)
Take Mock Tests
Take a full mock test for JLPT N5. There are many free tests online, such as on our JLPT Calendar page. Allocate time for each section: Language Knowledge 25 min, Reading 50 min, Listening 30 min. Real experience: One student got 60% on her first mock test, but after 30 days she scored 85%. So don't be discouraged.
Analyze Your Mistakes
After each mock test, identify the questions you got wrong and review them. Spend more time on weak topics.
Final Week Review
In the last 3 days, only review. Don't learn anything new. Go over all previous vocabulary, grammar, and kanji.
Practical Tips and Cautions
- Find Time: Study 1 hour in the morning and 30 minutes at night. You can also squeeze in 15 minutes during your office lunch break.
- Group Study: Connect with other students through our counselors to form a study group. Studying together boosts motivation.
- Visa and Japan Plans: Passing JLPT N5 makes it easier to enter language schools in Japan. Check our eligibility page for details.
- Caution: JLPT N5 is just the first step. To study or work in Japan, you'll need N2 or N1. But it all starts with N5.
Remember, JLPT preparation is a marathon, not a sprint. In 30 days, you'll build a foundation that will help you succeed in Japan.
If you follow this plan, passing JLPT N5 will be much easier. Also check out scholarship options — many schools offer scholarships to N5 holders.
