COE (Certificate of Eligibility) Explained: A Complete Guide for Bangladeshi Students

What is COE and Why Do You Need It?
COE stands for Certificate of Eligibility — a document issued by Japan's Immigration Bureau that proves you are qualified to study in Japan. Without a COE, you cannot get a student visa.
For Bangladeshi students, the process might seem a bit complicated, but I've guided many students through it. Let's break it down step by step.
Step 1: Enroll in a Japanese Language School
First, you need to get admitted to a Japanese language school or university. The school applies for the COE on your behalf. So choosing a good school is crucial. For example, Tokyo Central Japanese Language School or Yokohama International Education Academy.
Required Documents
- Copy of passport
- Highest educational certificate (SSC/HSC)
- Japanese language proficiency certificate (JLPT N5 or equivalent)
- Proof of funds (bank statements, sponsorship letter)
- Study plan (why you want to study in Japan)
Step 2: School Submits Your Documents to Japan
The school sends all your papers to the Immigration Bureau in Japan. This process usually takes 2-3 months. While waiting, you can prepare for the JLPT exam.
One of my students, Rafi, applied to a school in Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo last year. His COE arrived in exactly 2 months and 10 days. He used that time to take regular Japanese classes.
Step 3: After COE Arrives, Apply for Visa
Once the COE is issued, the school will email you a PDF copy. The original comes later by courier. Then you can apply for a student visa at the Japanese Embassy in Bangladesh.
Visa processing usually takes 5-10 business days.
Tips for Bangladeshi Students
- Show sufficient funds: Immigration wants to see you have enough money for tuition and living expenses. Showing around 15-20 lakh taka in the bank is safe.
- Learn Japanese: Having JLPT N5 increases your chances of getting COE. Use free online resources, and check the JLPT calendar for exam dates.
- Don't falsify documents: Any false information can lead to COE cancellation and future difficulties.
Potential Issues and Solutions
Sometimes COE gets delayed due to incomplete documents or additional queries from Immigration. Be patient and stay in touch with your school. If needed, contact us for guidance.
Final Words
The COE process may seem complex, but once you understand it, it's straightforward. If you start looking for a Japanese language school this week, you could be in Japan within 6 months. For more details, check our eligibility page.
