1. Basic Documents Needed for the Visa

First, let me clarify: after getting the Certificate of Eligibility (COE) from your school in Japan, you apply for the visa at the Japanese Embassy. The COE is issued by the Japanese Immigration through your school. Then your job is to submit the required documents to the embassy.

Required Document List:

• Visa Application Form — Download from the Japanese Embassy website. You'll need a passport-size photo (4.5 x 4.5 cm, white background, front view).
• Passport — Must be valid for at least 6 months after the visa expiry date.
• Copy of COE (Certificate of Eligibility) — The original COE will come to you from your school. You'll need both the original and a photocopy when submitting to the embassy.
• Educational Certificates — SSC/HSC or equivalent mark sheets and certificates. Don't forget to get them translated into English.

For a Japan student visa, proving Japanese language proficiency is not mandatory, but for school admission, you generally need N5 or equivalent. I'd say, if you're applying to a Japanese language school, having at least 150 hours of Japanese study certificate or JLPT N5/N4 is beneficial.
