Why Japan Is the Most Affordable Study Abroad Choice for Bangladeshi Students

When Bangladeshi students think of studying abroad, the US, Canada, Australia, or Europe often come to mind. But did you know that tuition fees in those countries can be 20–40 lakh taka per year? Plus living expenses, health insurance—altogether over 50 lakh taka annually. In Japan? National university tuition is only about 5–6 lakh taka (approx. 535,000 yen) per year. Private universities are 8–10 lakh taka—still far lower.
Tuition Fees and Other Costs in Japan
Japan's national universities charge roughly the same tuition: around 535,800 yen per year (about 5.5 lakh taka) at places like the University of Tokyo or Kyoto University. Private universities range from 800,000 to 1,200,000 yen (8–12 lakh taka). Still much cheaper than the US.
Living Expenses
In big cities like Tokyo, monthly living costs (rent, food, transport, utilities) run 80,000–120,000 yen (8,000–12,000 taka). Smaller cities like Fukuoka or Sendai are even cheaper—60,000–80,000 yen.
Part-Time Work: A Major Income Source
International students in Japan can work up to 28 hours per week during semester, and 40 hours during holidays. Minimum hourly wage in Tokyo is at least 1,000 yen (about 100 taka). Working 28 hours a week gives you roughly 112,000 yen per month—enough to cover most of your living costs.
I used to work in a restaurant in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. I earned about 110,000 yen per month, while my monthly expenses were around 90,000 yen. I could even save some.
Scholarship Opportunities
The Japanese government (MEXT) offers generous scholarships that cover full tuition and provide a monthly stipend of 117,000 yen (about 12,000 taka). There are also JASSO scholarships, university-specific awards, and private foundation grants. Check our scholarships page for details.
