Language School or Senmon School? Choose the Right Path to Study in Japan

You're probably dreaming of studying in Japan. But one big question stands in front: language school or senmon school (vocational school)? Many students get confused between the two. Actually, the right path depends on your goals. Let's understand with real examples.
What is a Language School?
A language school is an institution for learning Japanese. Here you can prepare for the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) and learn everyday Japanese for life and work. Most language schools offer classes from N5 to N1 level. For example, "Shinjuku Japanese Language Institute" in Tokyo's Shinjuku area or "Osaka Japanese Language Academy" in Osaka — these are popular language schools.
What is a Senmon School?
A senmon school is a vocational or technical school. Here you can get training for a specific profession, such as IT, business, hotel management, animation, nursing, etc. To enter a senmon school, you usually need N2 level Japanese or equivalent. The study period is typically 2 years, and you get a "Senmonshi" (専門士) degree, which is enough for jobs in Japan.
How to Decide Which One Is for You?
If Your Japanese Is Weak
If you are at JLPT N5 or below, it's wise to first enroll in a language school. After 1–2 years of studying Japanese, you can then move to a senmon school. For instance, a student from Dhaka named Rakib first studied at a language school in Tokyo for 1 year, passed N2, and then started studying IT at a senmon school in Yokohama.
If Your Japanese Is Good
If you already have N2 or N1, you can apply directly to a senmon school. Many senmon schools have special admission processes for foreign students. For example, "Digital Arts Tokyo" in Tokyo is a great option for those interested in animation and manga.
Visa and Part-Time Work Benefits
Both types of schools give you a "Ryugaku" (留学) visa, which allows you to work part-time up to 28 hours per week. However, language school students often have fewer job opportunities because of lower language skills. In contrast, senmon school students, with better Japanese, can find good jobs. For example, a senmon student working at a restaurant in Tokyo's Shibuya area can earn about 120,000 yen per month (approximately 1 lakh taka in Bangladesh).
Costs and Time
Language school fees are typically 70,000–90,000 yen per year (about 60,000–80,000 taka). Senmon school fees are higher, around 100,000–150,000 yen per year (about 85,000–1,27,000 taka). However, after finishing senmon school, job prospects are better, so the cost is more worthwhile.
How to Get Started?
- Step 1: Check your current Japanese level. Take an online JLPT mock test.
- Step 2: Define your career goal. Do you want to work directly or pursue higher education? Senmon school is for jobs, language school for language.

A caution: If you plan to move from a language school to a senmon school, you may need to go through the visa process again. So plan ahead.
