MEXT vs JASSO: A Simple Guide for Bangladeshi Students

Many Bangladeshi students and parents ask me: "How much does it cost to study in Japan? Are there scholarships?" Today, I'll talk about two of the most popular scholarships: MEXT and JASSO. You've heard their names, but what's the difference? Which one is right for you? Let's find out in simple terms.

What is the MEXT Scholarship?

MEXT is a scholarship given by Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. It's the most prestigious and fully-funded scholarship in Japan, offered directly by the Japanese government.

What benefits do you get with MEXT?

• Full tuition waiver: The government covers all your study costs.
• Monthly stipend: Research students get about 144,000 yen (roughly 130,000 BDT) per month; undergraduate students get 117,000 yen.
• Flight ticket: Your airfare from Bangladesh to Japan is also covered.
• Accommodation support: In some cases, you may get a spot in a dormitory.

But keep in mind, MEXT is highly competitive. Only a handful of students from Bangladesh get this opportunity each year.

What is the JASSO Scholarship?

JASSO stands for Japan Student Services Organization, a government agency that provides various financial aid to students. It's not as comprehensive as MEXT; it's partial support.

What are JASSO's benefits?

• Monthly allowance: Typically 30,000 to 48,000 yen (approx. 28,000–45,000 BDT) per month.
• No tuition waiver: You'll have to pay tuition yourself, but some universities offer tuition discounts if you have JASSO.
• Easier application: Compared to MEXT, applying for JASSO is easier because universities have direct agreements with JASSO.

JASSO is ideal for students who are already enrolled or about to enroll in a Japanese university.

MEXT vs JASSO: Key Differences

Now the question is: which one is best for you? Here's a comparison:

1. Application Process

For MEXT, you need to apply through the Embassy of Japan in Bangladesh, followed by a written test and interview. For JASSO, you apply directly to the university, and if nominated, you're considered for the scholarship.

2. Amount of Money

MEXT's stipend is much higher and covers all living expenses. JASSO's stipend is relatively lower, so you may need to rely on part-time work. But Japan offers plenty of part-time opportunities. You're allowed to work up to 28 hours a week, earning around 1,000–1,200 yen (approx. 900–1,100 BDT) per hour.

3. Application Timing

MEXT applications usually happen once a year (April–May). JASSO applications vary by university, but most are before the semester starts.

4. Selection Criteria

MEXT considers academic records, language proficiency, and interview performance. JASSO focuses mainly on financial need and academic merit.

Which One Should You Choose?

If your academic record is excellent and you can prepare thoroughly, go for MEXT. It will give you complete peace of mind. But if you don't get MEXT, JASSO is a good alternative. Remember, even with JASSO, you can study in Japan and manage expenses through part-time work.

Let me share an example. A student named Rafsan from Dhaka went to Japan with JASSO. He enrolled in a private university in Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo. He received 48,000 yen per month and covered the rest by working part-time. Now he's graduated and working in Tokyo. MEXT would have made things easier, but JASSO still helped him fulfill his dream.
