Tokyo vs Osaka: How to Choose the Best City to Study in Japan

If you're planning to study in Japan, the first two cities that come to mind are Tokyo and Osaka. Both are major cities, but they are worlds apart. As a senior counsellor, I've helped many Bangladeshi students choose between them. Let me share how you can decide which one is right for you.

Tokyo: City of Opportunities, but Expensive

Why choose Tokyo?

Tokyo is Japan's capital and one of the world's largest economic hubs. Studying here gives you maximum opportunities:

• Number of universities: Over 100 universities, including top names like University of Tokyo, Waseda, and Keio.
• Part-time jobs: Lots of options with higher pay—average 1,100-1,300 yen per hour. Restaurants, convenience stores, cafes—all types available.
• Career prospects: If you want to work in Japan after graduation, Tokyo has the most companies across all fields—IT, engineering, business.

Drawbacks of Tokyo

• High cost of living: Rent is 50,000-80,000 yen for a shared room. Everything is expensive—food, transport, entertainment.
• Commute and crowds: Morning trains are packed, and you might spend over an hour commuting to university.

Osaka: Best for Lifestyle, Lower Cost

Why choose Osaka?

Osaka is Japan's second-largest city, but life here is more relaxed and affordable.

• Lower cost: Rent is 30-50% cheaper than Tokyo. A good room costs 30,000-50,000 yen. Food is also cheaper.
• Friendly people: Osaka residents are known for being warm and humorous. You'll blend in quickly.
• Food culture: Known as 'Japan's kitchen' with famous dishes like takoyaki, okonomiyaki, and kushikatsu.

Limitations of Osaka

• Fewer universities: Good ones exist (Osaka University, Kansai University), but fewer than Tokyo.
• Smaller job market: Major company headquarters are in Tokyo. Finding a job in Osaka may require more effort.

How to Decide?

Ask yourself:

• Budget: If tight, Osaka is better.
• Career plan: Want to work in Japan? Tokyo has more internships and job fairs.
• Personality: Prefer a fast-paced city or a relaxed one? Tokyo is always rushing; Osaka is more laid-back.

I once advised a student to choose Osaka. With a limited budget, he studied engineering at Osaka University and now works at a good company in Kyoto. Another student chose Tokyo, gained experience, and settled there.

Why Japan is a Great Choice

From my experience living in Japan, it's safe, clean, and orderly. You can walk at night without fear, public toilets are clean, and trains run on time. Japanese people respect hard work and discipline. If you're willing to work hard, Japan will reward you.

Final Thoughts
